Miami: Group warns of dangers from resurgent use of crystal meth

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Health and law enforcement officials have noted crystal meth's arrival and in May organized the South Florida Methamphetamine Task Group to alert the public to a growing crisis. In Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Florida, meth has become especially popular in the gay party circuit, where 62 percent use the drug they call "Tina," according to Steven P. Kurtz, a professor at the University of Delaware who studies club drugs. Kurtz released a study of those attending this year's Winter Party in Miami Beach that showed that local gay residents are "much more likely to use drugs weekly, be HIV positive and have had an STD in the last year."
