U.S. Senate boosts funds for Africa AIDS fight Newsday The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved an additional $289 million for next year to combat AIDS in Africa and other areas ravaged by the disease, deflecting criticism that the administration's ambitious AIDS-fighting program was being underfunded. The amendment to a foreign aid spending bill would bring total government spending on global AIDS to $2.4 billion for the budget year that began Oct. 1.
