HIV mystery in the Philippines

The Lancet Infectious Diseases

For some unknown reason, rates of HIV infection and AIDS in the Philippines have remained extremely low since the first case was reported in that country in 1984. Paradoxically, this low rate has not been paralleled by low prevalence of risk factors. While the Philippine government points to the national effort—"Together to Get There!"—to explain the mystery, some experts hint at a lucky combination of factors, and others simply do not know the answer.
