Isolation of a human gene that inhibits HIV-1 infection and is suppressed by the viral Vif protein. Researchers from the U.S. and Britain have isolated a human gene, CEM15, that inhibits HIV infection. The antiviral action promoted by the expression of CEM15 is overcome by the presence of Vif (virion infectivity factor), encoded by the virus. Perturbing the critical Vif-CEM15 circuit may be a promising target for future HIV therapies or vaccines.

Prevention could reverse the pandemic, and good news on HIV-1 incidence in Uganda. In a survey conducted over 10 years, incidence of HIV-1 fell from 8.2 to 5.2 per 1000 person years at risk. Another analysis suggest that if the successes achieved in some countries in prevention of transmission can be expanded to a global scale by 2005, about 29 million new infections could be prevented by 2010.

U.N. says AIDS epidemic surges, 70 Million could die. AIDS could kill 70 million people by 2020 unless rich nations step up their efforts to curb the disease, the United Nations warned on Tuesday. More than 40 million people worldwide have AIDS or are infected with HIV, up from 34 million two years ago.  [Read report]
Nonoxynol-9 ineffective in preventing HIV infection. Spermicides containing nonoxynol-9 do not protect against HIV infection and may even increase the risk of HIV infection in women using these products frequently, according to a new WHO/CONRAD report.  [Read report]
